Again penalty against newspaper
This is the second time a newspaper in Cyprus has been ordered to pay a fine (first case: https://easygdpr.eu/de/gdpr-incident/strafe-gegen-zeitung/). In this case, the medium Politis had to pay a fine in the amount of € 10,000. A report published photos of a police operation at the Larnaca airport. Three police officers were visible in these photos, with their faces unpixelated. Furthermore, the full names of two of these officials were mentioned in the caption.
The two named police officers filed a complaint with the data protection authority. The latter initiated proceedings and ordered the newspaper to pay the above-mentioned fine. In the justification, the authority argued that the pictures of the police officers should have been taken or the photos should have been taken from a greater distance so that identification is not possible. The authority also disapproved of the mention of the full names; it would have been sufficient to mention the initials of the officials.
