Penalty against European University

The European University in Cyprus sent text messages (SMS) to its students. However, those affected had no way to cancel receipt of these messages free of charge. Instead, they should have sent an SMS message with “Stop” to the sender, but this is subject to a charge. Therefore, the university violated Section 12 of the GDPR and was ordered by the authority to pay a fine of € 500.
