Tiktok allowed data processing of 1.4 million under-13s without parental consent
In 2020, TikTok allowed children under 13 to use the platform, contrary to its own policies. The ICO estimates that up to 1.4 million UK children have used the service.
Under UK data protection law, information involving the processing of personal data of children under the age of 13 may only be used with parental consent. Furthermore, ICO also accuses the platform operator of not implementing adequate checks to identify and remove users under the age of 13. During the course of the investigation, the agency found that TikTok did not adequately address concerns raised by its own employees.
The ICO had originally considered a fine of 27 million British pounds.
