Erneut Strafe gegen Zeitung
For the second time, a Cyprus newspaper was fined (first case: Fine against newspaper). In this case, the newspaper Politis had to pay a fine of € 10,000. A report published photos of a police operation at Larnaca airport. In these photos three policemen were visible, the faces were not pixelated. Furthermore, in the caption the full names of two of these officials were mentioned.
The two named police officers appealed to the data protection authority, which instituted investigations and condemned the newspaper to pay the fine. In the explanatory memorandum, the authoritiy stated that the pictures of the police officers should have pixelated or the photos must be taken from a greater distance, so that identification is not possible. Also the naming of the complete names disapproved the authority, it would be sufficient to give only the initials.
